THE TRANSPLANT IN
CATALUNYA
Catalunya has been pioneering the transplant
field in the Spanish State. The first transplants
of kidney (1966), liver (1984), heart (1984),
pancreas (1983) and lung (1993)
were made in Catalunya as well as
and most of tissue transplants . The
transplant
programs in Catalunya have been characterized by
their great activity and its high welfare quality.
Catalunya has shown for fourteen years (from 1984)
one of the highest rates of kidney transplant in
the world (per million of
population) even bigger
than most of
the
countries with
a more developed
sanitary and economic system. The
liver transplant program in Catalunya also has an extremely high level of the activity that
locates it on top of the world-wide
ranking.
Similar results are reported
regarding the heart transplant activity and the
remaining
tissue transplant programs, those enjoy of an international
prestige. This degree of effectiveness has been
due to many factors, among which we should mention
the willingness and the effort of many
professionals. These professionals, avoiding
their own protagonist, have invested all their
dedication and efforts to built up the
transplant programs, offering nowadays a real therapeutic
chance
to the patients . It also should be
mentioned the
always positive
sensibility showed
by the Departament de Sanitat, which first developed a specific program and later a fully
dedicated organism
towards the transplant
about fifteen years
ago, known as Organització
Catalana de Trasplantament -
OCATT) .
It also needs to be
emphasized the interest that the
Catalan Administration and particularly the
Conselleria de Sanitat have adopted
towards the organ transplantation. In 1982-83 they
already had set up the bases of an organizational
model that had no previous references and was
demonstrated to be completely valid. In fact , later on it has
been implemented and widely adapted by the rest of the
Spanish State, being currently considered as a
reference for many
transplant
organizations of different countries .
This first class activity and quality level has had a
strong outer projection with the presence of many
transplant
professionals from our country in specialized
publications, in the main
scientific
forums and international organizations.
An aspect that has characterized the relation
between the different professionals from the
transplant has been the desire to work together
and to unite efforts for achieving
common objectives. A constant way of collaboration
between the different groups and the
organization has
been establish (multicentric
works, scientific
activities and congresses),
being the greatest achievement the
XVI the World Congress of Transplant organized by
the Catalan
Transplantation
Society
,celebrated
in Barcelona in August of 1996 with the
participation of 3,500 physicians
from 81 different
countries.
